Unleashing Potential: Billy Napier Reveals How QB Star is Set to Dominate

Florida’s quarterback Graham Mertz, who previously played for Wisconsin, is returning for his sixth and final college football season and aims to significantly increase his performance in 2024. Mertz had a standout year with the Gators, achieving personal bests in passing yards (2,910) and touchdowns (20) while minimizing interceptions to a career low of three.

During the SEC Media Days, head coach Billy Napier emphasized the positive impact Mertz will bring to the team in 2024, stating, “The most pivotal development affecting our team is Graham Mertz choosing to return as the Gators’ quarterback.”

Mertz is among the most seasoned quarterbacks in college football, boasting a total of 43 starts, 8,308 yards, and 58 touchdowns as he joins Gainesville for the upcoming season.

“Napier commented on Mertz’s growth during his time at Wisconsin, recalling conversations with coach Paul Chryst about Mertz’s progress, acknowledging both his successes and challenges. According to multiple sources at Gator Country, Mertz earned the respect of his teammates through his unwavering dedication, being the earliest to arrive and the last to leave the facility throughout his debut season at UF. This consistent work ethic translated onto the field, as Mertz achieved a 72.9% pass completion rate, ranking 3rd in college football.”

“Graham possesses strong character and genuine care for the game. He’s diligent and enjoyable to coach, among the most enjoyable players I’ve coached in my career. When coaching Graham Mertz, you need to come prepared as he meets your level of readiness. It’s a testament to his hard work – he’s earned every bit of it alongside the respect of his teammates through his competitive spirit last year.

With his return, he’s poised for a breakout year playing quarterback for our team, which is significant. His presence in the 2024 season will surely enhance Florida’s on-field performance. Additionally, he’ll play a role in mentoring five-star freshman DJ Lagway, providing an opportunity for Lagway to learn from one of the nation’s best quarterbacks, someone who embodies the right approach to the game in Graham Mertz.”

“In a discussion with Lagway, Napier mentioned our conversation about Graham’s return and how I had previously expressed to Graham that it would be the best thing for him. Graham acknowledged this after experiencing the entirety of the first semester, saying, ‘Coach, I understand that now.'”

With a deliberate focus on taking more strategic chances deep down the field, Mertz has the potential for a standout year in 2024.
