Following a successful period, Michigan Football’s recruiting appears to be losing momentum. The Wolverines have recently seen several of their top prospects choose other schools. In the last few days alone, JaDon Blair committed to Notre Dame and linebacker Kamar Archie chose Rutgers, which came as a surprise as the reigning national champions lost a top recruit to Rutgers.
In addition, Michigan football is facing challenges with other recruits. Highly-rated cornerback Shamari Earls is expected to commit to Georgia, and elite tight end Andrew Olesh has postponed his commitment, creating some concern despite Michigan currently holding onto his lead.
All of this comes as other Big Ten schools are enhancing their elite classes. This week, both Ohio State and Oregon have added a five-star recruit to their classes. Oregon made a surprising move by securing the nation’s top receiver, Dakorien Moore, while the Buckeyes recruited five-star linebacker Riley Pettijohn.
In the revamped Big Ten, Michigan football will need to recruit at an elite level. Classes ranked between 15 and 20 won’t suffice. To stay ahead in the Big Ten, Michigan must consistently rank in the top 10 each year, and there’s no excuse for the Wolverines not to achieve this.
Nevertheless, there are still reasons to be optimistic in the recruiting landscape. Let’s explore some of them.
Many top prospects remain on the board
The coaching staff should be under some pressure to secure commitments from these recruits and compensate for previous misses. There are several uncommitted top 100 recruits, including Andrew Olesh, Andrew Marsh, Andrew Babalola (Michigan seems to have a thing for Andrews), and Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, who have shown interest in Michigan football.
While Olesh has delayed his commitment, it is anticipated that he will make an announcement around the week of July 8th. Considering Alabama recently received a commitment from a tight end, it seems likely that Olesh will choose Michigan if he decides during the upcoming week. Florida has been making efforts to sway him, but Michigan appears to have the edge. It’s worth noting that Florida managed to unexpectedly steal an elite recruit (Aaron Chiles) from the Wolverines last year, but Michigan seems to be in the lead for Olesh.
Michigan is also in a promising position with top 100 wide receiver Andrew Marsh, who is expected to announce his commitment in August. Marsh is anticipated to attend Michigan’s BBQ at the Big House in late July, providing an opportunity for Michigan to solidify their chances of securing him. All signs indicate that Michigan is the frontrunner in his recruitment.
Nevertheless, with Dakorien Moore unexpectedly choosing Oregon over Texas, it raises the question of whether the Longhorns might reconsider pursuing Marsh, who hails from Texas. Despite the Longhorns being ahead in the recruitment of two other top-rated receivers, it’s worth keeping an eye on this situation. At the moment, the outlook seems positive for Michigan.
Michigan football trending up with 5-star offensive tackle
Michigan football has significantly narrowed the gap with Stanford in the recruitment of five-star offensive lineman Andrew Babalola. While there’s no specific timeline for Babalola’s commitment, the prevailing belief is that he could make a commitment before the end of the summer. Michigan has been steadily reducing Stanford’s lead and stands a real chance of securing his commitment. This is one to monitor closely, as Babalola is the only five-star prospect the Wolverines have a realistic chance of landing. Michigan just needs to make one final push.
Moving on to Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, it currently appears to be a recruitment battle between Michigan and Notre Dame. Unfortunately for Michigan, the Irish are excelling in recruiting and have a more appealing NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) plan. However, Michigan has been enhancing its NIL program and made a strong impression on Boateng during his visit. I believe that Michigan was leading after his visit, and now it’s crucial for the staff to ensure that the positive momentum from the visit is sustained. They need to do everything possible to secure Boateng’s commitment, especially considering Michigan’s pressing need for linebackers. Missing out on Boateng would be a significant setback. It’s definitely important to stay tuned for any updates regarding Boateng.
In conclusion, Michigan has the opportunity to secure numerous top recruits, so their recruiting class is far from finished and could potentially contend for a spot in the top 10 rankings. Stay tuned for any updates, and as always, go blue!
