Clemson University has made a significant change to its football coaching staff by firing defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin following a disappointing season. Head coach Dabo Swinney announced the decision on January 6, 2025, highlighting the struggles the Tigers’ defense faced, particularly against the run.
Underperformance in Defense
During Goodwin’s tenure, which began in 2022 after he was promoted from within to replace Brent Venables, Clemson’s defensive performance deteriorated notably. This past season, the team allowed an average of 160.6 rushing yards per game, marking their worst defensive showing since 2011. A particularly alarming statistic was the 292 rushing yards surrendered in a College Football Playoff first-round loss to Texas, contributing to the decision to part ways with Goodwin.
Dabo Swinney’s Statement
In his announcement, Swinney expressed gratitude for Goodwin’s contributions over his 13 years with the program, stating, “Wes has been a part of our program for 13 of the past 16 years… I love Wes and his family and wish him all the best as he continues his journey. Swinney emphasized the need for a strong defensive strategy moving forward and aims to have a new defensive coordinator appointed by the end of January or sooner.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, Clemson retains a talented roster that includes key defensive players such as T.J. Parker and Avieon Terrell. The offense is also poised for improvement with returning stars like Cade Klubnik and wide receivers Bryant Wesco and Antonio Williams. Swinney noted that solidifying the defensive coordinator position is crucial for achieving their goals in the upcoming season. This bold move reflects Clemson’s commitment to enhancing its performance on both sides of the ball as they prepare for future challenges in college football.
