Even though DJ Lagway shattered the Gasparilla Bowl record for most yards in a game, he faced online criticism following his performance during the Florida Gators’ 33-8 victory over Tulane in his first career bowl game.
In that match, Lagway threw for 305 yards and a touchdown, showing both brilliance and inconsistency. He had two turnovers, which highlighted his lack of precision at times. Despite being named the game’s MVP, rival fans still had plenty to criticize about the Gator quarterback.

In those games, he achieved passer ratings of 115.1 and 127.4. In contrast, Lagway completed about 63% of his passes on Friday, throwing for just 21 fewer yards and recording a passer rating of 134.1. While expectations can differ for 5-star versus 3-star recruits, it’s fascinating to see varying perceptions of what constitutes a good performance among different fanbases.
The intense reactions to freshman Lagway’s record-breaking performance highlight the expectations and reputation he has developed at just 19 years old. As he approaches the offseason, he undoubtedly has a wealth of motivation to drive him for next season, particularly with the upcoming September 20 matchup against Dawson and the Hurricanes in Miami.

Although Lagway’s final performance of his freshman year might not have been his finest, his future in Orange and Blue looks promising, regardless of the opinions from Coral Gables. For now, it seems that Lagway is primarily focused on the journey ahead.
