BREAKING NEWS: Rival Coach Unleashes Verbal Jab at Gators’ Rising Star

While DJ Lagway was breaking records in the Gasparilla Bowl, a rival coach from within the state was making critical comments on social media.

Even though DJ Lagway shattered the Gasparilla Bowl record for most yards in a game, he faced online criticism following his performance during the Florida Gators’ 33-8 victory over Tulane in his first career bowl game.

In that match, Lagway threw for 305 yards and a touchdown, showing both brilliance and inconsistency. He had two turnovers, which highlighted his lack of precision at times. Despite being named the game’s MVP, rival fans still had plenty to criticize about the Gator quarterback.

It wasn’t only the fans who weighed in; Miami Hurricanes Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shannon Dawson joined the conversation as well. After Florida’s win, Dawson, a Broyles Award nominee this year, tweeted a GIF that appeared to mock Lagway’s accuracy, using a scene from the classic movie ‘Major League.’

Given Dawson’s comments on a true freshman’s performance, it’s worth reflecting on the freshman he has coached. Just last year, Emory Williams, also a freshman, played in two games under Dawson, completing around 54% of his passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. In those games, he achieved passer ratings of 115.1 and 127.4. In contrast, Lagway completed about 63% of his passes on Friday, throwing for just 21 fewer yards and recording a passer rating of 134.1. While expectations can differ for 5-star versus 3-star recruits, it’s fascinating to see varying perceptions of what constitutes a good performance among different fanbases.

The intense reactions to freshman Lagway’s record-breaking performance highlight the expectations and reputation he has developed at just 19 years old. As he approaches the offseason, he undoubtedly has a wealth of motivation to drive him for next season, particularly with the upcoming September 20 matchup against Dawson and the Hurricanes in Miami.

Florida football QB DJ Lagway among nation's top true freshmen

While he’s a hot topic of discussion, Lagway appears to be dedicated to improving the Florida roster. He spent the weekend with former Texas Longhorn five-star Johntay Cook and was spotted chatting with newly available five-star Dallas Wilson after the game. As the Gators aim to secure these key recruits, Lagway remains a standout recruiter.

Although Lagway’s final performance of his freshman year might not have been his finest, his future in Orange and Blue looks promising, regardless of the opinions from Coral Gables. For now, it seems that Lagway is primarily focused on the journey ahead.
