At the US PGA Championship, Schauffele defeated Bryson DeChambeau by a shot when the latter birdied the last hole at Valhalla.
After winning the US PGA Championship and earning his first major championship, Xander Schauffele praised his “hectic and awesome” winning birdie.
In a record-breaking performance, Schauffele held off challenges from Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland at Valhalla with a final round score of 65.
The Olympic champion maintained his composure to finish one shot ahead of DeChambeau on 21 under par, the lowest score relative to par in major championship history. He did this by birdieing the 72nd hole.
Schauffele remarked, “After the putt lipped in, I was actually kind of emotional.” “I just need to stay in my lane. It’s been a while since I won, and I kept thinking that all week.
“Wow, it was really difficult to stay in my lane today, but I made an effort to keep my attention on my goal and stay ahead of every hole throughout the day. There were a few strange breaks in the house, but everything is well now.
“I really didn’t want to go into a play-off against Bryson,” he said. A lot of labor would have been involved. I simply told myself to seize this chance while it was still present. I’m quite happy with it. I’m worn out. I became a little bit more exhausted once I sat down to score. But only a flurry of feelings.
I looked up at the scoreboard and realized I had to birdie the last hole. It was amazing, but it was also a busy birdie. I kept telling myself that here was my chance to prove to myself that I deserved this and that I needed to earn it.
In spite of his defeat, DeChambeau was courteous, thanking Schauffele for his brave finish and recognizing his fortunate break on the 16th hole when a pulled shot bounced back onto the fairway.
“To start with, I’m proud of Xander for finishing the job at last,” DeChambeau remarked. He’s a really good golfer and a worthy major champion these days. He has a very lengthy history of playing well. played as a junior against him. This week has proven that he is not only an amazing golfer but also a wonderful person. Extremely joyful for him.
“On my side of the coin, disappointing, but whatever,” he said. I performed well. I wasn’t at my best all week. I felt as though I was basically at my “B” game.
