Within their organization, the Green Bay Packers have a storied history with quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, and Bart Starr are perhaps the best three quarterbacks to ever play for a single team.
Jordan Love now has the chance to carry on that heritage. His first complete season under center had a rough beginning, but in the second half, he began to play with confidence. Another ex-Packers quarterback now has the opportunity to establish his own legacy.
Former QB for the Green Bay Packers Lands First Position With New Team
After suffering an ankle injury in Week 7 of the UFL season, quarterback A.J. McCarron of the St. Louis Battlehawks, a former national championship winner for the Alabama Crimson Tide, was unable to play on Sunday. Fans of the Green Bay Packers may be familiar with his replacement, Manny Wilkins.
Wilkins joined the Packers in 2019 as an undrafted free agent after starting three seasons for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Wilkins was named to the team’s practice squad for his first season even though he was unable to make the roster that included Tom Boyle and Aaron Rodgers.
Wilkins was granted a reserve/futures contract after 2019, which allowed him to stay with the organization through 2020 until Jordan Love was selected, which ultimately resulted in Wilkins’ departure on April 27.
- Wilkins didn’t sign with another football team until he made a comeback in the XFL in February 2023, thus it seems that he hasn’t attracted attention from the NFL since that day in 2020.
Many cited Wilkins as a major question mark in this week’s game against the DC Defenders after it was revealed that McCarron, one of the few players in the running for the UFL Most Valuable Player Award, would not play. Wilkins hadn’t started a football game at any level since his senior year at Arizona State in 2018.
Jordan Love Is Expecting A Big Season For The Packers
Jordan Love Is Expecting A Big Season For The Packers
In his first season as a full-time starter in 2023, Love completed 64.2% of his throws for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, good for a 96.1 passer rating.
As the season got underway, Love had several difficulties. He had trouble making accurate throws from a distance. He had trouble reading defenses at times. Together with the team’s young receivers and tight ends, several of his new offensive line teammates were getting used to their new environment. The young receivers frequently ran the incorrect pass patterns, which could result in interceptions or incomplete throws, depending on the error.
Love was still a top-tier quarterback by the end of the season, despite a downturn in October. For 2,150 yards and 70.3% of his throws completed, Love was effective in the last eight regular season games. He threw one interception and eighteen touchdowns. During that time, he had the second-highest quarterback rating in the league, at 112.7.
In the playoffs, Love had a fantastic performance against the Cowboys. Three touchdowns and 272 yards were gained from the completion of 16 of the 21 passes attempted. He had a flawless quarterback rating before to his game-ending incomplete pass. Consequently, he had a 157.2 quarterback rating in the end.
Only more of the latter are anticipated by the organization for 2024.
