With their victories in Game 6, the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars advanced to the NHL conference finals.
Matt Duchene scored the game-winning goal as the Stars defeated the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in double overtime.
Dallas will find out who its opponent in the Western Conference is by watching the Vancouver Canucks vs. Edmonton Oilers series.
Florida defeated the Boston Bruins 2-1 to wrap up their second-round series.
Starting on Wednesday, the Panthers take on the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference final.
Five things to be aware of before Saturday’s postseason action:
STARS LINE UP
For the second consecutive season, Matt Duchene’s double overtime winner at 11:42 propelled the Stars to the Western Conference final.
Mason Marchment believed he had given Dallas the lead in the first overtime period, but the goal was overturned on review for goaltender interference when Duchene tussled with Cale Makar in front of Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev.
The Vegas Golden Knights, who went on to win the Stanley Cup, defeated Dallas in six games in the conference final last season.
BURNING PANTHS
For the second year in a row, the Florida Panthers are back in the Eastern Conference final.
They were defeated in five games by the Vegas Golden Knights in last year’s Stanley Cup final.
BANISHED BRUINS
The Boston Bruins lost to Florida in the second round of the playoffs, one year after being eliminated by the Panthers in the first round.
With the Panthers having won six straight playoff games in Boston’s TD Garden, home ice has not aided the Bruins in either series.
During this postseason, Boston was penalized for having a record seven men on the ice.
CANUCKS AMID THE TRENCH
For the fourth time in the team’s history, but only the first since 2011, the Vancouver Canucks are one victory away from making their fourth conference final.
Entering tonight’s Game 6 at Rogers Place with a 3-2 lead over the Edmonton Oilers, the Canucks have the opportunity to finish strong on the road and remain the only Canadian NHL team still in the running for the Stanley Cup.
Returning to Vancouver on Monday would mean a potential Game 7.
Still, the series has been close, with one goal separating the winners of the first five games. That occurred in two series during the 2017 postseason’s opening round.
AREA OF OILERS ON THE EDGE
This is a game that the Edmonton Oilers absolutely have to win.
The Oilers, who are now down three games to two in their second-round series against the Vancouver Canucks, will try to avoid elimination at home at Rogers Place.
Last year, the Oilers were defeated 5-2 by the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 6 of the second round, and they were unable to advance.
More suspense surrounds who will start in goal for Edmonton tonight. After starting the first two games, Stuart Skinner was substituted in Game 3, which ended in a 4-3 loss.
Since then, Calvin Pickard, 32, has made one appearance in the NHL playoffs.
