As is customary when other NBA clubs start their summer, rumors have already begun to circulate despite the Dallas Mavericks’ commanding lead in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
Earlier this week, Stephen A. Smith leaked a delicious rumor suggesting that the Mavs would aim to choose Bronny James ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers while also enticing LeBron James to Dallas.
Although it appears unlikely, there has also been important insider information regarding a key starter for the Mavericks who is set to become a free agency this summer.
Supposedly, the Mavericks ‘expect’ to retain Derrick Jones Jr. in Dallas by giving him a ‘big raise’.
A further wrinkle has been added to Derrick Jones Jr.’s free agency since it was previously reported that he wants to return to Dallas this summer. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Jones Jr. has “positioned himself to get a really nice raise that the Mavericks hope to be able to give him.” (At 58:04)
Given how important Jones Jr. is to this team, MacMahon’s remarks during his appearance on “The Lowe Post” with Zach Lowe are fantastic news for Mavs supporters.

In the playoffs, Jones Jr. has improved his play on both ends of the court and is an ideal 3-and-D wing partner for Luka Doncic because of his ability to make easy baskets. All season long, Doncic has praised Jones Jr., and the Mavs have assembled a strong starting lineup that includes Daniel Gafford, P.J. Washington, and Jones Jr. in addition to Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Keeping Jones Jr. should be at the top of Dallas’ summer to-do list because of his consistent defensive effect, especially given how much this Mavs squad loves to play defense. Jones Jr. appears to be the ideal teammate; he enjoys playing defense and never moans about his position.
It’s not lost on anyone that he guards the best player on the opposing side every single night, and he’s a big part of the reason the Mavs have advanced this far in the postseason.
With Game 6 of the series against the Oklahoma City Thunder taking place today, Dallas’ attention may soon turn to Jones Jr.’s free agency after the season. According to recent statements, both parties are interested in getting back together. However, it remains to be seen how much the Mavs are willing to offer Jones Jr. and whether other NBA clubs will also want to acquire him.
Keep checking back for all the most recent information on Derrick Jones Jr. and the Dallas Mavericks leading up to the 2024 NBA Playoffs and free agency.
