Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy issued an apology on social media Tuesday, following his outburst directed at critics of his team.
Gundy finds himself in an unusual position this season. With 169 victories over 20 seasons at Oklahoma State and 18 consecutive bowl appearances, his team was expected to be a strong contender for the Big 12 title. However, the Cowboys are currently at the bottom of the standings with a record of 3-6 and 0-6 in conference play, having lost six straight games. They need to win all their remaining matches to avoid a losing season.
During his weekly media briefing on Monday, a frustrated Gundy expressed his feelings about the negativity surrounding the team. He remarked, “In most cases, the people that are negative and voicing their opinion are the same ones that can’t pay their own bills. They’re not taking care of themselves or their families, yet they feel the need to complain about others to feel better about themselves. But at the end of the day, they remain the same failures they were before.”
After facing criticism for his comments, Gundy changed his stance. He stated, “I apologize to those who were offended by my remarks during Monday’s media call. My intention was never to upset any of our fans who have supported us and this program over the years.”
This isn’t the first time Gundy has had to apologize; in 2020, he faced backlash for referring to COVID-19 as the “Chinese Virus” and later for wearing a T-shirt associated with the far-right One America News Network, which caused tension with star running back Chuba Hubbard.
