WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes has stirred up controversy among Caitlin Clark fans with her recent remarks about the Indiana Fever standout.
During a recent appearance on Gilbert Arenas’s podcast, Swoopes shared her thoughts on Clark’s influence in the WNBA. She acknowledged that Clark has been “impressive” but suggested she has not been dominant in the league.
“People reacted strongly, saying, ‘Oh my God, you said she wouldn’t be good,’ but I didn’t claim she wouldn’t be good. What I said is that I didn’t think Caitlin, or Angel (Reese), would immediately dominate when they entered the league, and I still don’t believe either of them has. …I don’t see her as dominating yet, although she is not the same player she was in the first half of the season.”
Fans of Caitlin Clark quickly responded to Swoopes’ recent remarks.
One fan pointed out: “These are Sheryl Swoopes’ MVP numbers…” (2000) – 20.7 ppg, 4.0 ast, 6.3 rpg
(2002) – 18.5 ppg, 3.3 ast, 4.9 rpg
(2005) – 18.6 ppg, 4.3 ast, 3.6 rpg
“In comparison, here are Caitlin Clark’s rookie stats:”
(2024) – 19.5 ppg, 8.4 ast, 5.7 rpg
One fan argued, “If Caitlin isn’t considered dominant now, then Swoopes never was.” Another chimed in, “Swoopes doesn’t think Caitlin’s 19.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 8.4 APG this season is ‘dominant,’ but she’s the only player in WNBA history to average those numbers or better.”
