The Texas Longhorns’ recruiting efforts are gaining momentum as they secured their first five-star commitment for 2025 in wide receiver Kaliq Lockett. Before Lockett officially announced his commitment (pending paperwork this fall), Texas was already the clear frontrunner.
On3.com assessed Texas’s chances of landing Lockett at 88%, while Alabama trailed far behind with just a 4.6% likelihood.
According to the On3 Industry Rankings, which averages the top recruiting ratings, Lockett is ranked as the No. 17 player in the 2025 class and the third-best wide receiver nationwide.
Hailing from Sachse, Texas, Lockett stands over 6-foot-1 and weighs 175 pounds. On3.com likens him to Baltimore Ravens receiver Rashod Bateman, highlighting his “acrobatic in-air ability.”
His scouting profile notes that he excels at various levels, demonstrating the ability to dominate both on game nights and at camps. Lockett shows impressive burst off the line and athleticism, combining the agility of a smaller receiver with the catching reach of a larger one.
He proves capable of out-jumping defenders in contested situations and has advanced tracking skills. In a standout junior season, he recorded 59 catches for 1,299 yards and 13 touchdowns. While he will need to continue developing his physique, his top-end speed is solid yet could still see improvement.

Texas is a dominant force in college football, boasting some of the sport’s most valuable stars. According to On3.com, Lockett’s projected NIL value is $ 316,000, a figure that could increase significantly if he performs well during his time with the Longhorns.
Texas quarterbacks Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers are both listed among the top five most valuable college football players based on these projections. Manning’s estimated NIL worth is a remarkable 3.1 million, even though he hasn’t started a college football game yet. Ewers is also highly valued, with projections at 1.7 million.
It’s important to note that these figures are estimates, as brands and athletes usually keep the financial details of NIL deals private.
Texas Has the No. 12 Ranked Recruiting Class for 2025
Texas is currently ranked No. 12 in the 2025 recruiting class according to 247Sports, thanks to Lockett’s commitment. The Longhorns are connected to several other top recruits, so this ranking could improve in the coming weeks.
As it stands, Texas has already secured three recruits in On3’s top-25 for 2025. They are also projected to add athlete Michael Terry (No. 42) and wide receiver Jaime Ffrench (No. 55) to their roster.
Lockett shared his excitement about Texas during an August 7 interview with On3.com’s Steve Wiltfong, stating, “Coach Sark’s innovative offensive style and [wide receiver coach Chris Jackson’s] experience as an NFL coach really stood out to me. Texas feels more personal than other programs, and my previous interactions with them have also been positive.”
