Dax Milne #15 of the Washington Commanders warms up prior to the game against the Minnesota Vikings at FedExField

Las Vegas Raiders Make Powerful Move, Sign Former College Star Before Week 1 Preseason Showdown

The Las Vegas Raiders are set to face the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason opener on Saturday. As they prepare for this matchup, the team is still seeking clarity at the quarterback position, with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell vying for the starting role. Meanwhile, speculation is mounting about wide receiver Davante Adams and the possibility of a trade before the regular season begins.

As the Raiders progress through training camp, they made several roster moves on Tuesday, including the signing of former standout college wide receiver Dax Milne, previously from BYU and the Washington Commanders, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson. Additionally, the team has waived defensive tackle Tomari Fox and plans to place him on injured reserve if he goes unclaimed.

Dax Milne: Joining Las Vegas Raiders

On Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders bolstered their receiving corps by signing free agent Dax Milne. Milne, who played college football for the BYU Cougars, had a modest debut season in 2018, recording ten catches for 69 yards and one touchdown. His impact grew in 2019, when he made 21 receptions for 285 yards and two touchdowns. However, he truly excelled in 2020, leading the Cougars, who were quarterbacked by Zach Wilson, in both receptions and receiving yards. Milne finished the season with 70 catches for 1,188 yards and eight touchdowns, along with an additional 67 yards rushing.

Over his three years at BYU, Milne also contributed as a kick and punt returner. The 6’1″, 193-pound receiver logged 12 punt returns for 60 yards and two kick returns for 32 yards without scoring. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Milne caught 9 of 14 targets for 83 yards as a rookie. Last season, he led the NFL in punt returns, with 40 for 311 yards, and also served as his team’s kick returner. Milne scored his first NFL touchdown in Week 9 against the Minnesota Vikings, catching his only target for a six-yard touchdown.

Raiders: Updated Wide Receiver Room

The recently signed Dax Milne is expected to vie for the starting position as the punt returner for the Las Vegas Raiders, while also serving as a backup wide receiver. Unless there’s a trade, the team will continue to rely heavily on star wide receiver Davante Adams, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns during his first season with the Raiders in 2022. Veteran Jakobi Meyers and 2023 third-round pick Tre Tucker are likely to play alongside Adams. Meyers had a career-high eight touchdown catches last season with the Raiders, while Tucker recorded 19 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie year.

In addition to Milne, the Raiders have signed veteran Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Jalen Guyton, along with Alex Bachman and Tyreik McAllister. Among these additions, Guyton offers the greatest chance to make an immediate impact, having recorded 71 receptions, 1,112 yards, and seven touchdowns over five seasons with the Chargers.
