The Los Angeles Dodgers, known for making significant moves as the MLB trade deadline approaches each year, are reportedly eyeing a potential rotation upgrade ahead of the July 30 deadline. Garrett Crochet, the standout left-handed ace of the Chicago White Sox, is a prime target for the Dodgers this season. Despite an initial rejected offer, there’s strong speculation that the Dodgers are determined to secure Crochet, as indicated by Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation in a discussion with Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“They also submitted a proposal for Garrett Crochet from the White Sox, but it was rejected as it did not meet their requirements. However, Crochet is considered a wildcard in this situation. Given that he has already surpassed his career-high innings by 15, there are concerns about his availability for September and October. If he does remain available, it’s likely to be in a restricted bullpen capacity”.
The specifics of the Dodgers’ offer for Crochet are unknown. Despite the rejection by the White Sox, this setback isn’t expected to deter the Dodgers from continuing their pursuit of the left-handed pitcher. According to Nightengale, the Dodgers may even intensify their efforts to acquire Crochet during the current month.
“I believe they will continue their pursuit of him until a trade is finalized. The Dodgers have a track record of retaining their standout prospects to prevent them from causing trouble for the team in the future. The White Sox seem to be indicating that they have substantial interest in Crochet, as they are in discussions with around 15 teams about him. They are aware of his high value and are likely seeking to receive top prospects in return for him, considering that he is under contract until 2026 on a relatively affordable salary of $800,000”.
While Crochet would be a great addition to the Dodgers, who are in need of a strong left-handed pitcher, there are concerns about the potential risks associated with adding him to any rotation. Crochet has already surpassed his previous career high in innings pitched this season, reaching 105.1 innings so far. In 2021, he pitched 54.1 innings exclusively from the bullpen for the White Sox. With 19 games started, there are significant concerns about his ability to stay healthy and sustain his current level of performance.
However, Crochet’s skills and accomplishments are undeniable. At 25 years old, he holds a 6-6 record with a 3.08 ERA, 146 strikeouts, an opponents’ batting average of .203, and a 0.97 WHIP while throwing 1,691 pitches. Considering these factors, a potential trade for Crochet presents a proposition with high potential risks and rewards, where the reward could potentially outweigh the risk.
