With each fresh revelation of Vegapunk’s message, fans of One Piece have been on the edge of their seats for quite some time as the epic finale of the Egghead Arc builds. But the series’ greatest opportunity to solve its greatest mystery to date may have been destroyed by the most recent chapter, and there might not be another opportunity to pull off such an incredible surprise in the future.
The ending of One Piece chapter #1117, which cuts off just as Vegapunk is about to divulge some important D Clan information, gives fans all the information they need except one letter before the Five Elders attack the Iron Giant and end the broadcast. This was a very disappointing and unsatisfactory development.
It might not come along again, therefore Vegapunk’s letter would have been the ideal opportunity to divulge at least a little more about the D Clan. The eventual reveal might not have the same intensity or buildup that Vegapunk’s broadcast had painstakingly built up to, even though the Straw Hats still have a lot of ways to find out the truth.
There May Not Be a Better Chance for One Piece to Explain What D Means
The Broadcast by Vegapunk Provided the Ideal Setting for a Dramatic Disclosure
As far as the D Clan is concerned, fans still don’t know anything new about them since Imu revealed that they are the enemies of the World Government. This is despite Vegapunk’s message revealing a ton of shocking information about the submerged world of One Piece, the Void Century, the Ancient Weapons, Joyboy, and even the mysterious Ancient Kingdom he belonged to. But since Dressrosa, this was perhaps already a well-known truth.
While it is true that One Piece frequently teases mysteries in this manner, many would undoubtedly concur that Eiichiro Oda has revealed too much information. Since D was originally mentioned on Drum Island, fans have been itching to know what it means. Vegapunk’s show provided the ideal occasion to at last share some fresh details, albeit not the entire truth.
Of course, if and when the Straw Hats manage to reach Elbaf and are granted entry to the ruins of Ohara’s research, they will still be able to discover the truth for themselves. The revelation might not, however, have the same weight as Vegapunk’s message. The whole One Piece universe, including even the most minor characters like Chouchou and the mayor of Orange Town, has been listening to Vegapunk’s message, as the last few chapters have carefully shown.
It seems like the Egghead Arc and Vegapunk’s message have been building toward this pivotal moment from the beginning, yet it is disappointingly cut short. The Iron Giant, who hasn’t stopped moving since chapter #1066, was also quickly eliminated without having a chance to say or do anything. Considering how frequently the Iron Giant’s emergence was hinted at and how little chance it ultimately had against the Five Elders, this was equally disheartening.
The D Clan Reveals That One Piece May Be Milking Vegapunk’s Message
Though ten chapters of Vegapunk’s broadcast may not seem like much, they have felt like a lifetime because of Eiichiro Oda’s frequent interruptions. Chapter #1108, which was published at the end of February, is when the message initially appeared. Because of the surprising disclosures in each chapter, One Piece has been able to keep fans eager for every word from Vegapunk. But at this point, the narrative might be carrying the message a bit too far.
Since the Straw Hats have almost accomplished their escape, it is unlikely that Vegapunk’s message would fully resume in the upcoming chapters, but it would have been interesting to learn even a little bit more about the enigmatic D clan before the message concluded. Perhaps it would have been preferable to see some of Vegapunk’s lines partially veiled, as in chapter #1085, the final line of Lily’s letter.
However, given the current state of affairs, it is not feasible to infer any significance from the single exposed syllable for D. Fans will stay in the dark regarding the D clan and what the inherited will that comes with the initial entails until One Piece deigns to divulge anything more. Perhaps in the future, the cut-off portion of Vegapunk’s message will make sense, much like Lily’s message did.
